John Chapter 5 Part 2
Summary of (Hard Core) Home Group 8th March
John 5:16-47 Jesus Defends His Claims
Jesus’ outrageous claims:
• Jesus claims to be equal to God.
• He calls God his father.
• God reveals everything he does to him v20
• He raises things from the dead like God does v21 (eg paralysed man’s limbs are given life).
• God has given him the authority to judge the world v22
• Whoever hears Jesus and Believes God sent him will have eternal life v24
• Those who hear Jesus’ voice will be raised from death v25
Evidence Jesus gives to support his claims:
1. John the Baptist says Jesus is above all, he speaks the word of God and has the Spirit without limit. Whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life (John3:31-36)
2. Jesus’ miracles prove that he is sent from God and is doing God’s work.
3. God does not speak directly to the Jews in John’s gospel to support Jesus. However God speaks at Jesus’ baptism in other gospels (eg Mark 1:11) and ultimately supports Jesus’ claims by raising him from the dead after his crucifixion.
4. The Scriptures (the Old Testament) contains numerous prophesies written hundreds of years before Jesus was born which Jesus fulfils by his birth and work and death.
Background to Moses & the Law
Moses received the 10 Commandments from God and wrote the first 5 books of the Bible containing all the laws. God said if the Israelites fully obeyed him and kept his laws then they would be his Holy Nation. (Exodus 19 v3-6). Unfortunately there were so many rules it was impossible to keep the Law so Jesus called Moses the Jews’ “Accuser”.
Points to Ponder:
A. The Jews spent lots of time studying the scriptures and the law to find eternal life. The scriptures pointed to Jesus but the Jews “could not see the wood for the trees” and missed the point. Are we guilty of getting stuck on the details and missing out on our relationship with Jesus?
B. Some non-Christians believe that Jesus was a good teacher but was not special or equal to God. How can you respond using the evidence that Jesus gives?
